Mastering: The Movie

Something pretty light to kick off 2010.  Stay tuned for the NAMM wrap up, Ableton Bridge, a killer wireless Serato controller for under $150 and I thrash slip mode on a CDJ900.

I pity the guys who have to deal with this on a daily basis.

Hard Work

Hard work.

“Where do you DJ?”

I would get asked this question at least a couple of times per week. Working in the job I’m in, that is to be expected.  I sell DJ equipment, of course customers are going to ask. Funnily enough, i’m not employed because I DJ, I’m employed because I’m organised, can speak to people, and can sell things. So you can imagine the “Where do you DJ?” can get a little bit awkward. Tarekith’s guide to playing live.

I’ve been a big fan of Tarekith for a couple of years, not only does he give a lot of time to the the ALDJ forums as well as free effects plugins for Ableton, but he’s just posted what is possibly the best possible online guide to “playing live”. Read the rest of this entry »

Fresh Beat Friday – Paul Master – Broken Beats 7

Time to get some funk on.

Been listening to this in the car for the past few weeks, totally love it for Friday tracks.

Mixed by ex-Sydney sider and now Melbourne local Paul Master, this blend of nu jazz, funk and hip hop is total drink beers in the sun kinda music. Any mix that starts off with something sampling James Brown has got to be good right? Read the rest of this entry »

No mix this week, but some free advice.

So you’re an aspiring DJ or an established name putting out a new promo

You’ve spent a number of hours selecting tracks, arranging your mix, recording it.

Then re-recording it because you weren’t totally happy with it.

Then re-recording because you dropped a track in at the wrong time.

Then re-recordi….

You’ve got the picture right?  You’ve spent hours making sure your promo mix is perfect, and then you’ve fucked the whole thing up by using a shitty upload service, such as Mega Upload where the end user needs to wait for 45 seconds before downloading, or Sendspace, which i’m currently being forced to download from.

Great, you’ve succeeded in totally shooting yourself in the foot (Sorry Wavemotion)

To be honest, when i download mixes, and i see an external link that i know is going to be a pain, i avoid it.

So what  should you use?  Something that fits the current budget ($0)?

Personally, i use either my MobileMe and publicly share the file, or Drop Box, which gives you 2gb of online storage plus direct linking.  I’m not trying to plug something just for the sake of it, but i took that screen shot at the start of the post, and this is the current progress.

So, if you want people to download your stuff, don’t use a shitty service that’s frustrating for the user.

Substance – August Edition

aug_eflyer1

The substance crew have awoken from their winter hibernation to plan and deliver a mid winter party that will warm the cockles of your awesomeness. After Travis Lucas single handedly destroyed the dancefloor at our last event we thought it fitting to raise the bar and invite our friend and local trance superstar TRENT MCDERMOTT. Having an integral involvement in Trance Energy 2009, Trent of late has seen his career gallop into the forefront, being booked for such parties as Gategrasher and Martin Roth and SHOKK. His production skills leave nothing to chance and everything to the imagination, his release ‘LED’ being an integral theme for the Australian trance scene this year. Propped and locked, ready to deliver his set is sure to destroy the place.

Not to be outdone we have invited Substance’s long time DJ swapper, LOKI. Having had his hand in the scene for a number of years and running the successful “Unstable Sounds” parties and numerous events in Ballarat, we can hardly contain our excitement at having him reap anarchy all over our console.

Following on, our next guest is a long time visitor of the Substance massif and it is with “hands in the air” we welcome BLINKY back for his first MAIN ROOM PERFORMANCE at our new home. Having recently shifted pardigms in his production; the rest of the world seems to be taking notice – on Beatport.com he recently featured in numerous “Featured DJ top 10’s” most notably Dubfire’s. Along with his net label, Beatgeek, releasing countless Aussie produced mega tracks, this boy is surely set to smash the absolute shit out of Highlander.

And last, but definately not least, we welcome two newcomers to the fold – Hendo and Pantysnort. Both relatively new to the scene, these boys show exceptional technical skills and play some of the most upfront prog, house and tech that is on offer. No doubt these boys will be bringing something very special to Substance!

And as per-usual the regular residents featuring Taran M, J-Slyde, Rich OK, Simon Murphy, Denham Jay and Mouka, will also be in tow.

Drinks specials and free selected entry this night will also be on the menu!
